This is the only Platinum Award for Shimane Prefecture, and it is encouraging for us that Shimane Prefecture’s sake has been recognized so far away in France.

This competition has also helped us to discover the possibilities of pairing sake not only with Japanese food, but also with a variety of foods from around the world.

■About the Award
Kura Master is a sake competition for French people held on French soil since 2017.

The judges are mainly French and other Europeans, including MOF holders, who are certified by the French state as the best craftsmen, top sommeliers, barmen, carvists, and other alcohol beverage specialists from top French hotels, as well as restaurant and specialty store managers, hotel, chef and culinary The team consists of professionals in the food and beverage industry, such as restaurant and specialty store managers, hoteliers, chefs and school officials.

Wine glasses are used for tasting.

The authentic shochu and awamori competition was newly established in FY2021, expanding the scope of judging and increasing the number of products entered each year.

There are various competitions for Japanese sake in the world, but Kura Master focuses on the “compatibility of food and drink,” which is also a part of France’s historical food culture.
Through competitions, tastings, and various events, Kura Master creates opportunities to experience the marriage of food and drink, and provides a venue to promote Japanese sake, authentic shochu, and awamori to the European market, including France.

In addition, in order to ensure fair and impartial judging, a study tour of sake culture has been conducted every year since 2017 to enable the sommeliers and other judges to learn about sake in depth and to gain knowledge to properly communicate sake themselves.
